The heath is a herb that needs a lot of care. Without care, the heath areas will become grassy and overgrown and new forest would replace the heath.

Anyone who would like to lend a hand is very welcome to take part in the "de-shrubbing campaigns" in the nature park Südheide. Here, emerging pioneer tree species are removed with spade, saws and loppers. Every year volunteers are needed to keep the heath areas free of trees.
